Britomart to Auckland Museum Loop

Last weekend in Albert Park, we met a couple from California who were trying to find their way to walk to the Auckland Museum from the city. So thanks to them, we have another walk in Auckland!

Auckland Museum

We decided to start the walk at Britomart, but of course, you can start walking from any point along the loop.

The mini-tour walk takes in the Auckland Domain, Albert Park, Queen Street, Chancery Lane, Vulcan Lane, High Street, and old Government House.

Description: A mix of level paths, steps and slightly inclined paths. Suitable for users of average fitness and mobility. May require boots in wet weather, running shoes suitable in dry weather.

To see: Auckland City views, Rangitoto Island view, City Lanes, Albert Park, Old Government House, Auckland Domain, Wintergardens, Museum

Time: approx. 60 minutes. (about 5.6 kms)
Start: Britomart Place MAP

For a refreshment break we suggest Cafe Columbus at the rear of the Museum or the Wintergarden Cafe near the Winter Gardens and duck pond.

Auckland Domain and Museum

It turned out to be a beautiful sunny Mothers Day in Auckland. And time for a relaxing walk in Auckland Domain, the home of the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

The Domain has a variety of landscapes from open fields, to formal gardens and statues, to native bush walkways and waterfalls (you could almost imagine that you are in the Waitekere Hills).

We dropped into the Winter Garden Pavillion Cafe for coffee and we plan to go back to try the food. It was lovely sitting in the sun overlooking the duck pond.

After a quick look at the Winter Gardens, we headed for the Columbus Cafe inside the Museum. But when we saw their high prices for their cabinet food, we left.

It was an enjoyable amble on a beautiful day.

Newmarket Park Circuit

The Newmarket Park walk is behind and at the top of the shopping village of Parnell. It used to be a beautiful area of grass, mature trees and large rocks, one of the ‘hidden’ walks in Auckland. Sadly, all that has disappeared – today all that Grace and I could see was earth-moving equipment working on naked soil. So the pleasant walk we had in mind changed. We walked through the reserve opposite, then headed up to the Cathedral, then towards the Domain.

We allowed ourselves to be side-tracked when we saw the signs for Farmers Market behind the Foundation for the Blind building. When we arrived, it was all packed up – it starts at 8am and finishes at 12. We had arrived after 1pm…From there we crossed the railway line and headed back down the hill to our parked car.

We continued chatting at the cafe at Palmers Garden Centre.

It will be a long while before Newmarket Park is restored, so until then I will not be making available my walk for that area. UPDATE: Newmarket Park has been reopened. There is a children’s playground, a duck pond and public toilet facilities.

We have a selection of walks that visit Newmarket Park over at Walks from Newmarket.
