This walk on Auckland’s North Shore starts out in Rewi Reserve, then climbs up to the ridge of Sunset Road for a view over the rooftops of Auckland City and heads back down again to bush tracks, streams, and ponds in Unsworth Reserve and passes three playgrounds.

My dog and I live in Athena Drive, Totaravale for more than a decade and saw the upgrade of the Rewi Alley reserve footpath, bridge, and surrounding trees which helps a lot for those using the area for walks and exercise. I always walk my dog on-leash in this area as my dog is a runner. I noticed that the area is becoming more dangerous when off-leash dog run around free, never follow their owner commands, and attack other dogs. We were a victim of an off-leash dog attack in the reserve and my dog were bitten on both legs and sustained eight bite marks. I also had a cut on my hand and knees for stopping the attacking dog. The owner of the attacking dog never done anything, just enjoying watching how her dog devouring my pup. Luckily my dog survived after rushing to the emergency vet. We rarely walk in the reserve anymore. We often walk during dead hours when there’s no other dogs around and I carry always carry a spray and stick in the event of an unforeseen attack. Auckland Council should make the reserve a dog on-leash area instead.
Hi Mao, thanks so much for your feedback, such a shame to hear about your dog, it’s not good is it. Yes, I agree the council should make the reserve a dog on leash area only. Hopefully they might do that.
